Verizon’s fiber opportunity meets a tougher wireless profit test
Frontier expands the broadband footprint, while the wireless-led business must protect its earnings and fund its networks under heavy competitive pressure.
Verizon’s strength is its established communications network and customer base. The enlarged fiber footprint offers a concrete expansion opportunity, but its success depends on disciplined investment, competitive service and financial flexibility.
Frontier expands Verizon’s fiber reach and gives its broadband business a larger platform.
Revenue, operating margin and reported diluted earnings declined against the same fiscal quarter of the prior year.
Reported-quarter operating cash flow improved against the same fiscal quarter of the prior year, but network investment and borrowing remain important demands.
5.Latest quarter
In the fiscal quarter ended June, Verizon reported lower consolidated revenue than in the same fiscal quarter of the prior year. Operating margin and reported diluted earnings also declined against that baseline. The business remained profitable, but retained less operating profit from its sales.
Reported-quarter operating cash flow increased against the same fiscal quarter of the prior year. Cash remaining after gross property and equipment purchases also increased against that baseline, despite higher gross purchases.

6.The business
Verizon sells wireless, broadband and business communications services.
We like Verizon’s powerful combination of nationwide wireless reach and a growing fiber footprint. Frontier gives the company a bigger broadband stage, with more homes and businesses within reach of its networks. Bringing dependable mobile and home connectivity to that footprint is a compelling opportunity.
Wireless services dominate service revenue and generate nearly all operating income. Verizon earns money by providing connectivity to postpaid and prepaid phone customers, broadband households and enterprise customers. Its nationwide enterprise services use both its own networks and other providers’ networks.
7.Growth
Consolidated revenue declined against the same fiscal quarter of the prior year. The reported statements do not isolate the contributions from wireless, broadband or Frontier, so the decline cannot be assigned to a particular product.
The Frontier acquisition closed in January and expanded Verizon’s local-network and fiber reach. That creates a larger addressable footprint, rather than proof of organic sales growth. Meanwhile, the latest annual filing describes continuing losses in traditional telephone lines and older digital subscriber line services as customers switch technologies.

8.Profitability
Operating margin measures the share of revenue left after operating expenses. It declined against the same fiscal quarter of the prior year, showing that weaker profitability accompanied the revenue decline.
Verizon’s latest annual filing describes rivals using discounts, price guarantees and bundled perks to target customers. These tactics put pressure on pricing and margins. They are a documented business risk, not a proven explanation for this quarter’s margin decline.

Reported diluted earnings per share declined against the same fiscal quarter of the prior year. Consolidated net income remained positive, and Massive separately reports other non-operating income.
These are reported consolidated earnings, not adjusted results. The available evidence does not provide a detailed bridge explaining the earnings decline, so no acquisition charge, financing effect or operating adjustment is inferred.

10.Cash flow
For the reported fiscal quarter, operating cash flow exceeded gross cash purchases of property, plant and equipment. Operating cash flow and the cash remaining after those purchases increased against the same fiscal quarter of the prior year. Gross purchases also increased against that baseline.
For the trailing twelve months ended at June quarter-end, operating cash flow also exceeded gross property and equipment purchases. This derived remainder is not Verizon’s issuer-defined free cash flow. It excludes property sales, intangible investments, leases and noncash commitments, so it does not capture every investment demand.
| Metric | Period | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Cash generated by operations | TTM 2026-06-30 | $38.8 bn |

11.Balance sheet
At June quarter-end, cash was modest relative to current borrowings and noncurrent debt and capital lease obligations. Verizon therefore needs ongoing operating cash generation and access to financing to support its obligations and investment needs.
The latest annual filing reports secured and unsecured debt, alongside unused revolving credit capacity. The earlier annual filing warns that indebtedness can make financing more difficult or costly. Frontier integration and continued network investment make financial flexibility especially important.

| Cash and readily available funds | 2026-06-30 | $1.75 bn |

View the current assessment13.What we are watching
Watch whether Frontier’s enlarged footprint produces evidence of stronger broadband customer demand and successful integration. Separate that evidence from consolidated revenue, which does not reveal the acquisition’s contribution.
The other priorities are protecting wireless profitability, sustaining cash after gross network-asset purchases and managing borrowing needs. Customer retention, service revenue and investment detail would help show whether Verizon is strengthening its competitive position.
