4.Investment case at publication
Merck’s cancer franchise anchors a business with an earnings repair job
Keytruda gives Merck a powerful commercial foundation, while vaccines and animal health broaden its reach. The June quarter shows growing sales but unresolved pressure on reported profitability.
Merck’s opportunity rests on its established cancer platform and broad healthcare portfolio. Positive cash generation supports investment, but sustained reported profitability and disciplined financing remain essential tests of business quality.
Revenue rose against the same fiscal quarter of the prior year, but Merck reported an operating loss.
Operating cash flow remained positive in the reported fiscal quarter and increased against the same fiscal quarter of the prior year.
Pricing pressure, vaccine competition in China and borrowing commitments are important constraints on the business.
5.Latest quarter
Merck’s fiscal quarter ended in June brought higher revenue than the same fiscal quarter of the prior year, but sales growth did not produce a reported operating profit. Consolidated net income and reported diluted earnings per share were also negative.
The operating loss narrowed against the preceding fiscal quarter. That is an improvement in the immediate earnings picture, but the same fiscal quarter of the prior year was profitable.
| Metric | Period | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Reported revenue | Q2 2026 | $16.61 bn |
| Annual revenue growth | Q2 2026 | 5.1% |
| Reported operating income | Q2 2026 | -$0.58 bn |

6.The business
Merck sells human medicines, vaccines and animal health drugs.
We like Merck’s powerful combination of cancer treatment and disease prevention. Keytruda anchors a compelling oncology platform, while Gardasil and pediatric vaccines extend its reach beyond treatment. The strongest opportunity is to build on that established healthcare footprint and turn its commercial breadth into durable business performance.
Animal health gives Merck a distinct business outside human pharmaceuticals and vaccines. Within human health, the company also serves cardiometabolic disease and infections, earning revenue from the sale of its products.
7.Growth
Reported consolidated revenue increased against the same fiscal quarter of the prior year. Product-level sales and growth contributions are unavailable, so the increase cannot be attributed specifically to Keytruda, Gardasil or animal health.
Access to customers matters as much as the breadth of the portfolio. Merck’s latest annual filing describes global pressure to contain healthcare costs and consolidation among healthcare entities in the United States. These forces can constrain product pricing and market access.

8.Profitability
The reported operating margin was negative in the June fiscal quarter, compared with a positive margin in the same fiscal quarter of the prior year. The smaller operating loss against the preceding fiscal quarter does not yet establish a return to sustained profitability.
In the latest annual fiscal period, gross margin declined against the preceding annual fiscal period. The latest annual filing also reported higher restructuring expenses in cost of sales against that preceding period, including depreciation, impairment and termination costs linked to manufacturing changes. Those annual disclosures provide context, not an explanation of the June quarter’s loss.

9.Earnings
Reported diluted earnings per share moved from a profit in the same fiscal quarter of the prior year to a loss in the June fiscal quarter. The loss per share was smaller than in the preceding fiscal quarter.
Positive other non-operating income did not prevent a consolidated net loss. The available fields do not provide a complete explanation of the difference between operating income and net income, and they do not support substituting an adjusted earnings measure.

10.Cash flow
For the reported fiscal quarter ended in June, operating cash flow was positive and increased against the same fiscal quarter of the prior year. Gross cash purchases of property, plant and equipment also increased against that same prior-year quarter. Cash remaining after those purchases increased against the same baseline.
For the trailing twelve months ended at June quarter-end, operating cash flow also exceeded gross cash purchases of property, plant and equipment. This derived cash measure excludes property sales, intangible investments, leases and noncash commitments. It is not Merck’s issuer-defined free cash flow or a measure of cash available for unrestricted distribution.

| Cash generated by operations | TTM 2026-06-30 | $19.97 bn |
| Cash after investments | TTM 2026-06-30 | $16.06 bn |

11.Balance sheet
At June quarter-end, reported borrowings and noncurrent debt and capital lease obligations exceeded cash and short-term investments. Positive operating cash generation supports financing capacity, but those obligations make disciplined investment and capital allocation important.
Merck’s latest annual filing records dividends and share repurchases during the latest annual fiscal period. These uses of cash sit alongside manufacturing investment and financing needs; the available evidence does not establish their current funding mix.
| Metric | Period | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Cash and readily available funds | 2026-06-30 | $6.85 bn |
| Short-term investments | 2026-06-30 | $0.29 bn |
| Short-term debt | 2026-06-30 | $2.83 bn |
| Long-term debt and leases | 2026-06-30 | $51.08 bn |

View the current assessment13.What we are watching
Watch for a return to positive reported operating income and evidence identifying which products support revenue growth. For Gardasil, the local HPV vaccine approval in China disclosed in the latest annual filing adds a concrete competitive issue to monitor.
Manufacturing execution and financing discipline also matter. Merck reports access to alternative sources for most principal manufacturing materials, but it still depends on outside suppliers, distributors and partners for important parts of development, production and commercialization.
