Salesforce’s customer-data engine has more work to do
Connected sales, service and commerce tools give Salesforce a compelling platform opportunity, but revenue growth is not yet delivering a stronger operating margin.
Salesforce can deepen its role in customers’ daily work by connecting customer data, applications and conversational agents. The business case depends on keeping subscriptions useful enough to renew, improving operating profitability and allocating cash carefully across acquisitions, shareholder returns and financing obligations.
Salesforce connects customer information with the tools companies use to sell, support, market and conduct commerce.
Revenue rose against the same fiscal quarter of the prior year, but operating margin declined against that baseline.
Cash generation supports investment, while subscription renewals, acquisition execution and debt obligations remain important tests.
5.Latest quarter
In the fiscal quarter ended July, Salesforce reported higher revenue and diluted earnings per share than in the same fiscal quarter of the prior year. Operating margin declined against that same baseline, showing that revenue growth did not translate into better profitability from running the business.
Other non-operating income made a substantial contribution to reported earnings. That makes operating income a useful separate check on the performance of Salesforce’s software business.
| Metric | Period | Value |

| Reported revenue | Q2 2027 | $11.35 bn |
| Annual revenue growth | Q2 2027 | 10.8% |
| Reported operating income | Q2 2027 | $2.33 bn |

6.The business
Salesforce sells cloud software that helps companies manage customer relationships.
We like Salesforce’s ambition to turn scattered customer information into useful action. Its strongest opportunity is to connect selling, customer support and commerce inside the tools people already use, then bring conversational agents into that work. This is a vivid, practical platform story: help teams serve customers without constantly switching systems.
Salesforce earns subscription revenue from its applications. Service Cloud supports customer service, Marketing Cloud supports digital campaigns, and Commerce Cloud powers online commerce. Its application platform and MuleSoft integration tools help customers connect and extend those systems.
7.Growth
Reported revenue increased against the same fiscal quarter of the prior year and against the preceding fiscal quarter. The consolidated figures do not identify how much growth came from particular products, acquisitions or existing customers.
The latest annual filing describes agents working through familiar channels, including voice, chat and Slack. That creates a concrete product opportunity, but the reported figures do not establish its contribution to revenue. Subscription renewal remains essential because customers are not obliged to renew when contracts expire.

8.Profitability
Operating margin measures the share of revenue left after operating costs. It declined against both the same fiscal quarter of the prior year and the preceding fiscal quarter. Salesforce remains profitable at the operating level, but the reported quarter does not demonstrate improving cost efficiency.
The annual filing describes intense competition for engineers, salespeople and other skilled staff. Customers also need trained implementation professionals and technical support. Those demands make product development and service quality important spending priorities, although the quarterly figures do not explain the margin decline.

9.Earnings
Reported diluted earnings per share increased against the same fiscal quarter of the prior year. However, substantial other non-operating income means the earnings result should not be treated as a direct measure of subscription-business performance.
The latest annual filing explains that strategic-investment gains can include changes in investment values and impairments. It does not establish the composition of the reported quarter’s other income. The distinction matters because investment-related earnings need not reflect customer demand or cash received.

10.Cash flow
For the reported fiscal quarter, operating cash flow increased against the same fiscal quarter of the prior year. Cash remaining after gross purchases of property, plant and equipment also increased against that baseline, despite higher gross purchases.
For the trailing twelve months ended July, operating cash flow comfortably exceeded gross purchases of property, plant and equipment. The reported cash-after-purchases measure excludes acquisitions, intangible investments, leases and noncash commitments. It is not Salesforce’s own definition of free cash flow.
In the latest annual fiscal period ended January, acquisition spending was primarily associated with Informatica. Salesforce also funded strategic investments, dividends and share repurchases. These uses of cash extend well beyond physical-asset purchases.
| Metric | Period | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Cash generated by operations | TTM 2026-07-31 | $15.75 bn |
| Cash after investments | TTM 2026-07-31 | $15.15 bn |

11.Balance sheet
At the July quarter-end, Salesforce held cash and short-term investments alongside a substantially larger noncurrent debt-and-capital-lease balance. Current borrowings were absent from the reported balance sheet, but that does not remove longer-term financing obligations.
The annual filing reports a broadly distributed customer base without a dominant revenue customer. That reduces dependence on an individual account, while acquisition spending and shareholder distributions make disciplined capital allocation important.
| Metric | Period | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Cash and readily available funds | 2026-07-31 | $8.31 bn |
| Short-term investments | 2026-07-31 | $3.09 bn |
| Short-term debt | 2026-07-31 | $0 bn |
| Long-term debt and leases | 2026-07-31 | $39.29 bn |

Watch whether Salesforce can sustain subscription demand while restoring operating-margin progress. Evidence of customers adopting connected workflows and agents would help clarify the platform opportunity without relying on consolidated revenue alone.
Renewal performance, implementation quality and the integration of Informatica deserve attention. Cash allocation should also be judged across acquisitions, strategic investments, shareholder returns and debt obligations—not just physical-asset spending.
