    OUR VERDICT

    3.Our verdict

Yes — we would buy at this price.

We like BlackRock's powerful combination of investment distribution and portfolio technology. Its leading exchange-traded fund platform gives it a strong foundation, while Aladdin and eFront extend its reach into the tools clients use to understand their investments. The exciting opportunity is to serve the whole portfolio, connecting public markets, private assets and investment decisions.

Analysts’ average target is $1,337.00, 19.3% above the $1,120.78 reference price on Oct 15, 2026.

    4.Investment case at publication

BlackRock stretches beyond index funds into the whole portfolio

Private-market fees and portfolio software broaden its reach, while acquisition costs and uneven cash generation test the benefits of that expansion.

BlackRock's strength lies in serving clients across investment products and the technology used to manage them. Its leading fund platform provides distribution, while alternatives and integrated portfolio software offer deeper client relationships. The latest reported quarter shows stronger revenue and operating profit than the same quarter last fiscal year, but the broader expansion still needs to deliver steadier cash generation.

    1. BlackRock pairs a leading fund platform with software that helps clients manage public and private investments together.

    2. Revenue and operating profit improved from the same quarter last fiscal year, although higher expenses reduced profitability from the preceding quarter.

    3. Private-market fees strengthen the business mix, but acquisition costs and weak half-year operating cash generation deserve close attention.

    5.Latest reported quarter

In the reported fiscal quarter ending in June, BlackRock generated more revenue and operating profit than in the same quarter last fiscal year. Operating expenses rose more slowly than revenue on that comparison, leaving more revenue as operating profit.

The comparison with the preceding quarter was less favorable. Revenue increased, but operating expenses climbed faster and operating profit declined. Profit attributable to common shareholders also fell from the preceding quarter, while remaining above the same quarter last fiscal year.

Massive's quarterly statements provide a limited recent history, rather than a complete multi-year record. They do not provide a quarterly breakdown of revenue growth by product or acquisition.

    6.The business

BlackRock manages investments and provides portfolio-management software.

BlackRock earns investment-management fees, performance fees and revenue from securities lending and technology services. Institutional clients dominate its managed assets, and its investment range spans equities, bonds, multi-asset strategies, money-market funds and alternatives. Client assets under management are distinct from assets owned by BlackRock.

    7.Growth

Private markets provide a distinct route to growth beyond index investing. In the latest annual filing, alternatives contributed disproportionately to long-term base fees and securities lending revenue relative to their share of long-term managed assets. Annual performance-fee growth also reflected private markets, including the HPS transaction, partly offset by weaker liquid-alternative revenue.

Aladdin Risk supplies risk analysis, while eFront supports the management of alternative investments. BlackRock offers eFront separately and within its integrated Whole Portfolio solution. That gives clients a way to view public and private assets together without requiring a separate investment-management mandate.

Institutional distribution also creates exposure to large client decisions. The latest annual filing attributed Asia-Pacific outflows largely to a client's partial withdrawal from lower-fee institutional index strategies. That distinction matters: a large movement in managed assets need not carry the same effect on fees.

    8.Profitability

The reported June quarter retained a substantial share of revenue as operating profit. However, other operating expenses increased from the preceding quarter and outweighed the benefit of higher revenue. The statements do not explain the underlying causes of that expense increase.

The latest annual filing gives clearer context for the expanding cost base. Employee compensation increased partly because of the GIP, HPS and Preqin transactions, including nonrecurring retention-related deferred compensation. Higher incentive compensation also reflected higher operating income and performance fees. Keeping skilled employees is essential, but the acquired businesses must justify their added costs.

    9.Earnings

Diluted earnings per share rose from the same quarter last fiscal year but declined from the preceding quarter. The reported diluted share count was also higher than a year earlier, making the distinction between total shareholder profit and profit per share important.

Reported earnings include items outside operating profit. In the June quarter, other income supported pretax profit, while interest expense exceeded interest income. Noncontrolling interests reduced the profit attributable to common shareholders from consolidated net income.

The latest annual filing also describes Subco Units that can be exchanged into BlackRock common stock. These instruments matter when assessing potential dilution; the available evidence does not establish the cause of every change in the diluted share count.

    10.Cash flow

Operating cash flow returned to positive territory in the June quarter after an outflow in the preceding quarter. It nevertheless remained below consolidated net income. Other operating adjustments explain much of that gap, but the quarterly statements do not provide enough detail to assign those adjustments to particular business activities.

For the reported half-year, the earlier operating outflow absorbed much of the June quarter's cash generation. Operating cash remaining after property and equipment purchases did not cover half-year dividends. That is a more restrained picture than the income statement alone suggests.

June-quarter investing cash outflows included property and equipment purchases and other investing activities. Financing cash flow included dividends, net long-term debt repayments and inflows associated with noncontrolling interests. Those noncontrolling-interest flows should not be treated as cash earned from BlackRock's own services.

    11.Balance sheet

Cash increased from the preceding quarter, while reported long-term debt and capital lease obligations were broadly stable. Current assets exceeded current liabilities. These measures provide useful liquidity context, but the summarized balance sheet does not explain the composition of its large other-asset and other-liability categories.

Goodwill and acquired intangible assets are prominent on the balance sheet. They make the durability of acquired client relationships and business earnings important. The latest annual filing also identifies employee retention and acquisition-related disruption as risks to maintaining a skilled workforce.

The latest annual financing discussion, which excludes consolidated investment products, describes dividends, Subco distributions, repurchases and debt repayments alongside new borrowing. It also reports that acquisition spending and shareholder distributions reduced total liquidity resources, partly offset by operating cash and financing. That annual account should remain separate from the reported June-quarter cash movements.

    13.What we are watching

Watch whether private-market fee growth remains durable as the acquired businesses become more fully integrated. Expense discipline and employee retention will help determine whether that broader product range produces lasting benefits.

Client withdrawals deserve attention alongside new business, especially in institutional index mandates. For technology, the useful development is adoption of integrated public-and-private portfolio tools, rather than assuming that product breadth automatically explains consolidated revenue growth.

The financial milestone is steadier operating cash generation across reporting periods. It should support investment and distributions without relying on noncontrolling-interest inflows as a substitute for cash earned by the business.
