Better reported operating economics give Amgen a firmer foundation for oncology and rare diseases, without resolving payer pressure or financing demands.

4.Investment case at publication
Amgen’s cancer and rare-disease portfolio gives its biotech engine fresh reach
A stronger June quarter shows the earning power of its broad medicine portfolio, while payer pressure and substantial debt keep execution important.
Amgen has a strong operating business built around medicines for serious diseases. Its clearest opportunity is to extend its oncology and rare-disease franchises while using operating cash to support innovation, manufacturing and debt repayment.
Revenue, operating margin and reported diluted earnings improved against the same fiscal quarter of the prior year.
Newer cancer therapies and the Horizon rare-disease portfolio broaden Amgen’s commercial opportunity beyond its established medicines.
Strong cash generation supports investment, but payer discounts, supplier dependence and substantial debt remain important risks.
5.Latest quarter
In the reported fiscal quarter ended June, Amgen generated higher revenue and a wider operating margin than in the same fiscal quarter of the prior year. Reported diluted earnings also rose against that baseline. The business retained more operating profit from its sales, rather than relying on revenue growth alone.
Massive’s consolidated statements establish the improvement, but they do not identify which medicines drove it. The result supports confidence in the overall operation without proving that any particular launch or acquisition caused the gains.

6.The business
Amgen develops and sells biotechnology-based medicines.
We like Amgen’s reach into diseases where effective treatment matters deeply. Its strongest opportunity is to build powerful cancer and rare-disease franchises alongside its established medicines. Blincyto, Imdelltra and the Horizon portfolio give that opportunity concrete products and a compelling commercial foundation.
Its portfolio also includes Enbrel and Otezla for inflammatory diseases, Prolia, Xgeva and Evenity for bone health, and biosimilars. It earns money by selling medicines, but wholesaler prices are not always the prices it ultimately retains. The latest annual filing explains that contractual provider prices can require payments back to wholesalers.
7.Growth
Reported quarterly revenue rose against the same fiscal quarter of the prior year. Product-level sales and a quarterly volume-versus-price breakdown are unavailable, so the consolidated growth cannot be assigned to oncology, rare diseases or another franchise.
Portfolio development gives Amgen several routes to commercial expansion. Onyx brought Kyprolis into oncology, while Horizon added rare-disease medicines including Tepezza. Research investment and newer therapies help refresh the product range as established medicines face competing treatments.

8.Profitability
Operating margin measures the share of revenue left after reported operating costs. In the June fiscal quarter, it widened against the same fiscal quarter of the prior year. That is evidence of stronger consolidated operating economics, although the statements do not isolate product mix, manufacturing costs or research spending as the cause.
Pricing remains a genuine constraint. The latest annual risk disclosure says consolidation among insurers and pharmacy benefit managers has strengthened their negotiating leverage and produced greater discounts, rebates and service fees. A valuable treatment does not automatically give Amgen control over the price it retains.

9.Earnings
Reported diluted earnings per share increased against the same fiscal quarter of the prior year. These are reported earnings, not an adjusted measure that removes selected expenses.
Consolidated net income was positive but below operating income. Reported other non-operating income was negative. The available fields do not provide a complete explanation of the gap, so it should not be attributed entirely to debt costs or any other unreported component.

10.Cash flow
For the reported June fiscal quarter, operating cash flow exceeded gross cash purchases of property, plant and equipment. Operating cash flow and the cash remaining after those purchases were higher than in the same fiscal quarter of the prior year. Gross purchases also rose against that baseline.
For the trailing twelve months ended at June quarter-end, operating cash flow likewise exceeded gross equipment and property purchases. The remainder is a derived measure, not Amgen’s issuer-defined free cash flow. It excludes intangible investment, leases and other commitments.
Separately, the latest annual filing says cash from operations supported manufacturing-network investment, debt repayment and dividends during that annual fiscal period. Amgen’s investment challenge is to maintain dependable supply while funding the research that sustains its medicine portfolio.
| Metric | Period | Value |

| Cash generated by operations | TTM 2026-06-30 | $12.48 bn |
| Cash after investments | TTM 2026-06-30 | $10.18 bn |

11.Balance sheet
At June quarter-end, Amgen held substantial cash, but current borrowings and noncurrent debt and capital lease obligations together exceeded that cash balance. Liquidity provides flexibility; it does not remove the burden of financing the business.
The latest annual filing describes competing uses for accumulated cash: internal and external innovation, capital spending, debt repayment and shareholder distributions. Maintaining room for research and manufacturing while meeting financing obligations is central to capital allocation.

| Cash and readily available funds | 2026-06-30 | $13.99 bn |
| Short-term investments | 2026-06-30 | $0 bn |

View the current assessment13.What we are watching
Watch whether newer oncology and rare-disease medicines gain commercial traction while established products face biosimilar and generic competition. Product-level disclosures would help distinguish a broad-based improvement from concentrated success.
Also watch realized selling prices, manufacturing reliability and debt repayment. Amgen identifies sole-source supplier exposure and manages it through inventories, supplier relationships and alternative sourcing where feasible. Reliable supply and disciplined financing are essential companions to a strong therapeutic portfolio.
