American Express earns more from its payment platform as merchant economics stay in focus

The June fiscal quarter showed a wider operating margin, but the value of membership still has to work for both cardholders and merchants.

American Express's fiscal quarter ended June was encouraging because reported revenue growth came with a wider operating margin against the same fiscal quarter of the prior year. More revenue remained as operating profit. For a company that combines payment cards, lending and a merchant network, that is a more useful result than revenue growth alone.

The central question is how well the company balances an appealing membership experience with attractive merchant economics. The consolidated results support that balance at the operating level, but they do not reveal which products or customer groups contributed most.

    1.What improved

Reported revenue and diluted earnings per share increased against the same fiscal quarter of the prior year. The operating margin also widened against that exact baseline. Together, these results show a profitable business handling more reported revenue without surrendering its operating profitability.

For the reported June fiscal quarter, operating cash flow increased against the same fiscal quarter of the prior year. Cash remaining after gross purchases of property, plant and equipment also increased against that baseline. This is a derived subtraction, not American Express's issuer-defined free cash flow or cash available for distribution. It excludes property sales, intangible investments, leases and noncash commitments.

Operating cash flow covers the second fiscal quarter of 2026 and the twelve months ended June 30, 2026. Gross cash capital purchases and free cash flow cover the second fiscal quarter of 2026.

    2.What disappointed

The economic offset was greater physical-asset spending. Gross cash purchases of property, plant and equipment in the reported June fiscal quarter increased against the same fiscal quarter of the prior year. That absorbed cash, although operating cash flow still exceeded those purchases. The figures do not identify the projects or establish whether their returns are attractive.

Merchant acceptance remains a structural pressure point rather than a demonstrated quarterly deterioration. The latest annual filing warns that competitors with lower costs or other revenue sources can offer more attractive acceptance pricing. American Express must preserve the value merchants receive from its cardholders while carrying the cost of its own membership offering.

    3.What drove the quarter

The business earns discount revenue from merchant acceptance and serves consumers and businesses through payment cards and related services. Its network also processes payments involving cards issued by other institutions. That gives it routes to customer activity beyond cards it issues itself.

The latest annual filing describes rewards expenses tied to billed business and revenue sources including cross-currency spending, network partnerships and loyalty-related fees. These explain important economic mechanisms, not the reported quarter's specific causes. The quarterly evidence does not isolate spending, pricing, lending income or rewards costs, so attributing consolidated growth to any particular driver would go beyond the facts.

4.What changes for the investment thesis

No prior published thesis is available for comparison. Our initial view is that American Express is a high-quality business because it combines a profitable merchant network with direct cardholder relationships and commercial services. The reported quarter supports that view through revenue growth and a wider operating margin against the same fiscal quarter of the prior year.

The Amex Travel App, described in the latest annual filing, illustrates an opportunity to make membership easier to use. It does not prove a contribution to quarterly earnings. This is an assessment of the business, not a change in an entry decision based on the share price.

    5.What we are watching next

Look for clearer evidence on cardholder spending, rewards expenses and merchant acceptance economics. Those details would help explain whether the operating margin reflects durable business strength. Watch digital engagement too, because the annual filing warns that new payment technologies could put other providers between American Express and its customers.

Funding and credit evidence matter alongside payments. Deposit repricing, loan performance and regulatory capital would help complete the picture that consolidated cash flow cannot provide. Bank cash movements include deposit and lending activity, so cash remaining after physical-asset purchases should not be treated as distributable earnings.
