Lam’s stronger quarter leaves a cash question
Sales and operating profitability strengthened against the prior-year fiscal quarter, but less operating cash arrived despite higher earnings.
Lam Research’s June-ended fiscal fourth quarter showed a business earning more from stronger sales. Revenue, operating margin and reported diluted earnings per share improved against the same fiscal quarter of the prior year. For a supplier of precision chipmaking equipment, that combination matters: the sales gain carried through to operating profit rather than being absorbed by operating costs.
For the reported quarter, operating cash flow declined against the same fiscal quarter of the prior year. Cash also remained positive after gross purchases of property, plant and equipment, but that remainder was lower against the same prior-year quarter. The central question is why stronger accounting earnings did not bring stronger operating cash receipts.
Operating cash flow covers the fourth fiscal quarter of 2026 and the twelve months ended June 28, 2026. Gross cash capital purchases and free cash flow cover the fourth fiscal quarter of 2026.

1.What improved
Operating margin widened against both the preceding fiscal quarter and the same fiscal quarter of the prior year. That means Lam retained more operating profit from each dollar of revenue. Revenue and reported diluted earnings per share also increased against those same baselines, giving the improvement breadth across the income statement.
The distinction matters because sales growth alone does not prove better economics. Here, operating profit grew faster than sales against those periods. The consolidated statements support that conclusion, although they do not explain how much came from pricing, product mix or individual customer spending.
2.What disappointed
The economic weakness was the gap between earnings and cash. For the reported June-ended fiscal fourth quarter, operating cash flow was lower than in the same fiscal quarter of the prior year. Gross cash purchases of property, plant and equipment were higher against that same baseline, leaving less cash after those purchases.
Operating cash flow covers the fourth fiscal quarter of 2026 and the twelve months ended June 28, 2026. Gross cash capital purchases and free cash flow cover the fourth fiscal quarter of 2026.
For the fiscal year ended in June, the annual filing also reports lower operating cash flow than in the preceding fiscal year. This makes cash generation worth examining beyond the quarterly result. It does not establish financial distress: cash generation remained positive, and year-end cash exceeded the reported borrowing and capital lease categories. The evidence does not provide a complete explanation for the earnings-to-cash gap.
3.What drove the quarter
Lam sells equipment and services that help chipmakers build material layers and selectively remove them into precise patterns. Its leading etch position and strong deposition presence put it inside essential manufacturing steps. Memory manufacturers are particularly important customers, so their equipment spending is a meaningful business exposure.
The annual filing describes deep silicon etch technology, dry photoresist processes and wafer-level packaging capabilities. These show where Lam applies its process expertise, not which products drove this quarter’s sales. For the fiscal year ended in June, higher net investing outflows than in the preceding fiscal year primarily supported laboratory investments in the United States and manufacturing facilities globally, according to the filing.
4.What changes for the investment thesis
No prior published thesis is available for comparison. This is an initial business view, not a claim that our opinion changed. The results support a high-quality assessment through established technology positions and strong operating profitability.
The cash weakness keeps that assessment grounded. Market leadership does not by itself prove customer retention or pricing power. Lam must protect its technical edge while meeting demanding delivery schedules. This business judgment is separate from any decision about the share price.
5.What we are watching next
The next evidence to watch is operating cash flow alongside reported earnings, using the same fiscal-quarter baseline. Gross equipment and property purchases should remain separate from net investing cash flow. Cash after gross purchases is a derived measure, not Lam’s issuer-defined free cash flow, and it excludes other investment categories.
Also watch whether laboratory and manufacturing investments support product execution and reliable deliveries. Lam identifies supplier availability, changes in customer and product mix, and improved competing products as risks. Customer consolidation can strengthen buyers’ bargaining power. Those pressures matter even when the current income statement is strong.
